Strain Gages Applied to Gears for Research on Forces During Gear Rotation
An application of strain gages to study the bending stress at the root of a gear tooth. Three linear pattern strain gages were applied across the width of a gear tooth near the gear Base Circle just above the root fillet. The gear tooth was loaded to failure by a machine specially designed for the purpose. The measured strains were analyzed by a team of mechanical engineers searching for ways to extend gear life.
